Glen Campbell Guitar Page

Mission: To analyze and study Glen's guitar playing and his music covering a variety of topics.

This month's topic comes from a posting on the fan page.

Hi, I saw Glen on Larry King the other night, it was great, just wish Larry would shut up and let his guest(s) talk! That aside the real treat of the program was Glen unplugged, is the show scheduled to rerun anytime soon so I can tape it? Can anyone give me the tab for that simultaneous ascending/descending run lick from "Southern Night" the way Glen performed it on Larry King? It's the one right after the opening lick. Thanks, Ray

Great question Ray, and yes I agree, Larry should shut up more. Glen just rips these types of licks off without even thinking about them. I had to think about it, the descending top line is easier to hear than the ascending bass type line. I consulted with my chart and here's what we find. The top line is based on a blues scale in the key of E. The bottom line is an ascending chromatic run beginning on the low G.

I'll be using the popular internet TAB notation that is used online, for an explanation you can check here. For those of you who read standard notation that's included below.

These two lines are played at the same time, ending in an E major chord strum.

E----3---2---0--------------------------0---------
B------------------3---0----------------0---------
G--------------------------3---2---0---1----------
D-----------------------------------1---2---------
A-------------0----1---2--3---4--------2---------
E----3---4- -----------------------------0---------

The notation shows the main intro lick for "Southern" with the lick in question at bar 4. Of importance for guitarists are the top and bottom lines of notation.

This phrase will be easier played by you fingerstyle guitarists, you flatpickers like me will probably have to hold your flatpick with your thumb and index finger while playing the top line with your middle or ring finger. Have fun.
